(May 14, 1868 - May 14, 1935) was a gay German physician, sex researcher, and early gay rights advocate.
Hirschfeld spoke out against the prosecution of homosexuality. Under the motto “Through science to justice,” he wanted to prove to the innateness of homosexuality, and so creating a demand for their impunity.
He took over for over a generation before him, developed by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, established by science but suppressed theory of a “third sex” between men and women, which consisted of intermediate sexual (gay, transgender and intersex).
Hirschfeld was mainly due to his energy and his talent for organization is the most important pioneer of sexology.
In the film “Different from the Others” (1919), Hirschfeld plays himself.
